What's the use of democracy and growth?

We're hearing a lot of numbers showing growth to the developing countries and almost developed countries such as India like GDP, Special Industrial Zones, etc.,. Good to foresee a more prosperous society. But, one that that we consistently observe and fail to concentrate on is the economic imbalance in these countries - almost all of them. The affordability and standard of living of majority of the population below the poverty line seems to be not improving and the governments and organizations are very much turning blind eyes towards the less fortunate. We read stories that there are people who are unable to even afford nutritious food to their children. It is an irony that these are the majority of the people who take part in democracy and it is the other dark side of irony that these are the same people who are repeatedly ignored by those who are elected by them. Take an example of India - I read a story that a grand daughter of a freedom fighter who gave up his everything towards the freedom of the country and the prosperity of the poor people is shuttled around all sorts of administrative places (does the authorities have time to think about the fact that she would not be able to afford transportation to run around like this?) to request financial help to raise her four kids alone (her husband is no more). What sort of a world are we living in? It's a shame on us that we are letting our leaders to boast on democracy and growth from stage to stage and find time to fight out political enemies conveniently ignoring those who need to be helped?
